\u2018I think the artist is born as a suffering child\u2019, zegt theatermaker Israel Horovitz als hij een acteur omschrijft die jij ook kent.<\/p>\n

Hij speelde in vijf films uit de jaren \u201870.<\/p>\n

Alle vijf de films wonnen prestigieuze prijzen. In totaal veertig Oscarnominaties.<\/p>\n

Maar niemand weet zijn naam.<\/p>\n

Ik ook niet. Zo gek. En tragisch ook. Maar ook passend bij wie hij is.<\/p>\n

\u2018I knew it was you!\u2019 zegt Al Pacino en hij zoent zijn oudere broer en buitenbeentje Fredo.<\/p>\n

The kiss of death\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Bij sommige acteurs zie je de melancholie van hun gezichten af en ik heb een zwak voor deze mensen.<\/p>\n

Zoals Philip Semour Hofman (rip). Er zit altijd iets tragisch in zijn rollen.<\/p>\n

Cazale heeft dat ook.<\/p>\n

Die sc\u00e8ne in The Godfather<\/em>. Dat zijn vader wordt neergeschoten. Hij probeert een wapen te pakken en het valt uit zijn handen. Daarna gaat hij bij het levenloze lichaam zitten en hij begint te huilen.<\/p>\n

Je snapt in die sc\u00e8ne het hele personage Fredo.<\/p>\n

De Don wordt neergeschoten en zijn zoon Fredo weet niet wat hij moet doen. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

De oudste broer die zo graag mee wil doen met de maffiapraktijken van zijn familie.<\/p>\n

Maar hij is een buitenbeentje. Hij heeft een minderwaardigheidscomplex en maakt altijd de verkeerde keuzes.<\/p>\n

Zo\u2019n menselijk tragische rol. Je voelt twee films lang zijn ongemak, pijn, zelfhaat en kwetsbaarheid.<\/p>\n

In 1975 kwam Dog Day Afternoon<\/em> uit. Een film die ik als kind zo bizar en spannend vond.<\/p>\n

Al Pacino overvalt met twee vrienden een bank om geld te pakken voor een genderbevestigende operatie voor zijn vriend Leon. Maar de overval gaat helemaal mis.<\/p>\n

John Cazale speelt een van de bankovervallers. Een klunzig, zenuwachtig type.<\/p>\n

Het is zo goed\u2026<\/p>\n

De beroemdste zin uit deze film is overigens Al Pacino die \u2018Attica! Attica!\u2019 schreeuwt naar de toeschouwers die buiten de bank staan om te zien hoe de gijzeling afloopt.<\/p>\n

Cazale trouwt met Meryl Streep in 1976. Je weet wel. De vrouw die altijd wel een oscar wint als ze in een film speelt.<\/p>\n

In \u201877 krijgt hij longkanker.<\/p>\n

Maar hij besluit de film The Deer Hunter<\/em> af te maken.<\/p>\n

Ken je die film? Over getraumatiseerde Vietnamsoldaten met een zenuwslopende Russische roulette-sc\u00e8ne.<\/p>\n

Cazale speelt een bijrol als de sukkelige vriend Stan in de vriendengroep.<\/p>\n

HBO heeft in de zero\u2019s een korte documentaire over hem gemaakt. Maar ik kan die niet op een streamingsplatform of betaaldienst vinden.<\/p>\n

Tot ik na lang zoeken op YouTube de docu vond waar bekende acteurs praten over Cazale. Het heet ‘John Cazale I Knew It Was You’.<\/p>\n
