Lieve vreemdeling, Nee zeggen is niet altijd makkelijk. Helemaal niet tegen een seksueel gefrustreerde vriend die in een mediterrane stad een uitnodiging had van twee meiden om naar een of andere vage discotheek ver van het centrum te gaan. Toegelaten worden door de uitsmijters was een risicootje. Maar het overwegen waard, toch? Nou, geen idee, maar we hadden alle drie een korte broek aan met een simpel shirt erboven en onze iets te witte huid straalde vooral toerisme uit. Bovendien waren we alle drie al dronken van de mixdrankjes en het was eigenlijk wel gezellig zo in het centrum in de kleine straatjes van de stad. Genoeg vertier. Overal mensen. Overal open deuren. Ik kon me niet zo goed voorstellen wat een discotheek nog zou kunnen toevoegen aan deze avond. Bovendien – maar dat zei ik niet – krijg ik het snel benauwd van mensenmassa’s. Als die discotheek ver van ons appartement vandaan ligt, kan ik niet naar huis als ik het niet trek. De gedachte alleen al laat me angstig voelen. Bovendien. Wat interesseert mij die twee vrouwen nou. We zijn toch met z’n drieën op vakantie? We zitten niet op Sunny Beach met als hoofddoel neuken en dronken worden. Maar hij accepteerde mijn nee niet. De andere vriend die mee was, wist dat het gewoon nee is als ik nee zei. Toen nam de avond een rare wending. De twee meiden vertrokken met de taxi naar de discotheek. Maar die vriend kon zich hier niet overheen zetten. Aangemoedigd door zijn alcohol werd hij gefrustreerder en gefrustreerder. Je zou misschien verwachten dat ik het moest ontgelden. Maar het was de andere vriend. Alle frustraties uit het verleden, die ik allang vergeten was, kwamen weer naar boven. De tact was weg. Het was duidelijk wat die gefrustreerde vriend aan het doen was: zo hard en pijnlijk mogelijk de waarheid zeggen. Al zwervend door de straten van de stad hebben ze uren ruzie gemaakt. Ik probeerde de boel nog te sussen. Dingen te laten voor wat het was. Maar het was een vuur dat je niet meer kon blussen. De beschuldigingen werden harder en harder. Gemener en gemener. En toen viel er niets meer te zeggen. Alleen maar stilte. We liepen naar huis. Gingen naar bed. De volgende dag deed die gefrustreerde vriend alsof er niets aan de hand was. De andere vriend was nog steeds diep beledigd en zei nauwelijks meer wat. En we moesten nog twee dagen… De twee langste dagen uit mijn bestaan. Dit viel niet meer te lijmen. Drie volwassen kerels, die het eerste deel van de vakantie de tijd van hun leven hadden. Dronken avonturen die ik nu nog rondom het kampvuur in geuren en kleuren zou kunnen vertellen. Maar nu is het enige wat me herinnert aan deze vakantie die ruzie. En mijn enorm opgelaten gevoel als derde persoon. Had ik dan ja moeten zeggen? Hadden we dan toch naar die discotheek moeten gaan? Had ik me er gewoon overheen moeten zetten? Mijn angstige gevoelens moeten opofferen? Ik, de party pooper? Tja. De vriendschap heeft de vakantie overleefd. Maar het heeft wel jaren geduurd om het te laten slijten. Het was niet de eerste keer dat drank invloed had op de gemoedstoestand van een vriend. De kwade dronk is echt een wrecking ball. Voorbij het onredelijke en je kan de kalmte niet meer terugbrengen bij de ander. Ik ben wel eens nuchter aangekomen op een feestje dat al een tijdje bezig was. Ik kwam bij mijn stage vandaan, waar we een evenement in de avond hadden. Dat nuchter aankomen in de stad is al een ervaring op zich. Niet alleen valt de geur van oud zweet, sigaretten en bierscheten in de club meer op, maar ook hoe raar bekenden en onbekenden doen als ze dronken zijn. Normaal ging ik mee in die drankflow. Je bereikt samen binnen een paar uur de gemoedstoestand wasted. Maar als laatkomer is die schade niet meer in te halen. Ik kon slechts zien hoe mijn wereld anders was dan die van hen. Terwijl we in dezelfde ruimte zaten, dezelfde muziek luisterden en dezelfde dansende lichamen zagen. Goed. Ik kwam dus de club binnen. Zocht ze op. Ik nam een biertje. Maar het ging al vrij snel mis. Ik weet niet meer precies wat er gebeurde, maar een goede vriend en huisgenoot werd door de beveiliger bij zijn kraag gepakt en zo de club uitgezet. Buiten probeerde ik hem vooral te kalmeren en weg te krijgen van de ingang. Ik ontfutselde zijn garderobenummer, lulde me bij de beveiligers naar binnen met de belofte dat ik hem mee zou nemen naar huis. Bij de garderobe heb ik zijn en mijn jas gepakt. Terug naar buiten, hartje Utrecht. Was hij nergens meer te bekennen. Fucking hell. De enige plek die ik me nog kon voorstellen was de cafetaria. De drukste plek van de stad, met drie rijen dik aan dronken, schreeuwende mensen verspreid voor de counter, wachtend op hun kebab of patatje speciaal. Het personeel kan alleen maar humeurig kijken en heel hard de bestellingen die klaar zijn rondschreeuwen. Het was daar altijd chaos. Dus wat deed die vriend altijd? Als zo’n bestelling werd rondgeschreeuwd en in de eerste paar seconden niemand reageerde, riep hij ‘Ja!’ en duwde zich een weg naar voren. Hij pakte het frietje over en ging het rustig buiten gratis opeten. Het werkte altijd. Maar deze avond was zijn karma niet goed. Want ik trof hem daar aan net nadat hij zich naar voren had gewurmd. Maar het personeel had het in de gaten en kwamen achter hun frituurbakken vandaan om hem met drie man naar buiten te werken, hardhandig. Met een schop onder zijn reet dat ‘ie moest oprotten. Daarna zochten we te lang naar zijn fiets. Met hem achterop reed ik naar ons huis. De rit naar Zuilen was sowieso lang vanaf het centrum. Maar met een dronken gast die zijn evenwicht niet kon houden op de bagagedrager nog langer. Ook heeft die bij minstens twee rotondes zitten kotsen. Ik nog steeds nuchter. Hij verre van. De volgende dag kon hij zich er uiteraard weinig meer van herinneren. Behalve dan dat ik er opeens was, in de club. Dat was de enige anekdote die hij aan deze avond overhield. De mysterieuze verschijning van Tomson Darko. Ik weet niet hoe het is als vrouw in het uitgaansleven. Ik kan me er alles bij voorstellen dat het ongemakkelijk is, of soms beangstigend. Ik weet wel hoe het is als man. Ook beangstigend. Je voelt de spanning bij de mannen met kwade dronk. De blikken in hun ogen. Het geloer naar de vrouwen, maar ook naar de mannen die te lang terugkijken. Er hoeft niet veel te gebeuren of iemand pakt je bij de kraag vast om even duidelijk te maken wie hier de Bokito van de kroeg is. Als het niet binnen gebeurt, dan wel op straat. Ik weet niet wat nou precies de aanleiding was, maar ik liep met een vriend dronken de kroeg uit en we zwierven door de straten van Arnhem richting een andere kroeg. Twee gasten kwamen de straat ingelopen en bleven naar ons kijken. In mijn onschuld keek ik terug. Ze stopten met lopen en vroegen waarom we keken. Die vriend van me stapte op ze af, ik er braaf naast. We wisselden kort wat woorden uit of alles goed ging. De vriend stak zijn hand uit en wilde ze een fijne avond wensen. De andere twee keken er minachtend naar en weigerden de hand te beantwoorden. En toen werd ik kort met een hand op mijn borstkas naar achteren geduwd, zodat ‘ie vol kon uithalen in mijn gezicht. Daar lag ik dan. Te tollen. Alsof je een bal op je gezicht hebt gekregen. Er volgden nog wat trappen tegen mijn lijf aan. Die andere vriend lag ook op de grond. Toen liepen ze weg. Duizelig en wat verward liep ik met hem terug naar de Korenmarkt. Onwerkelijk. Geen idee wat nu te doen. Drie keer raden wie we weer tegenkomen op de Korenmarkt? Die twee gasten. Die vriend van me bijdehand genoeg om ze weer aan te spreken om te laten zien dat hij niet bang voor ze is. We komen met z’n vieren uit in een steegje. Een steeg waar niemand anders loopt. Ik voelde bij het weerzien geen agressie. Geen gevoelens van wraak. Zo zit ik niet in elkaar. Ik zou niet eens weten hoe ik iemand moet slaan. Vroeger op de basisschool bij het naspelen van actiefilms corrigeerden meiden uit de klas me dat ik mijn duim bij een vuistslag over mijn vingers moest doen. Niet eronder. Want dan brak je je duim als je iemand raakte. Die vriend bleef met die gasten bakkeleien. Ik liep wat van ze vandaan en belde 112, waar ik zei dat ik geslagen was en hoe de steeg heette. Een van die twee gasten had in de gaten dat ik iemand had gebeld. Dus hij begon ook te bellen. Maar dan naar zijn vrienden. Dat ze nu moesten komen om te matten. Ik liep terug naar de hoofdstraat waar mensen waren. Ik kon de angst niet meer aan om daar nog een keer in elkaar gemept te moeten worden. Politieagenten liepen op me af en ik sprak ze aan en legde uit dat ik net had gebeld. Die twee liepen net de steeg uit en toen de politie naar ze keek, draaiden ze zich om, om te vluchten. Blijkbaar was dat het teken dat ze schuldig waren, want zonder pardon werd mijn belager gearresteerd. Terwijl de politieman mijn gegevens probeerde op te schrijven, brak achter ons een nieuwe vechtpartij uit. Zes agenten probeerden een man op de grond te krijgen. Dat lukte niet. Dus de agent excuseerde zich. ‘Meld je morgen op het bureau’, zei hij en daarna stortte hij zich ook op die man. Ik ben daarna naar huis gefietst met een oog dat steeds meer pijn ging doen. Soms kunnen fietstochten heel lang aanvoelen. Vooral in de winter als er een te koude wind staat of als het begint te regenen. Als je samen met iemand fietst, kan een rit zo voorbij zijn. Maar als je een paar klappen in de stad hebt ontvangen en dan teruggaat, dat is ook een apart gevoel. Tijd voelt langzaam en snel aan. Half verdoofd. De pijn. Het doortrappen om zo snel mogelijk thuis te zijn om te gaan slapen. Maar mijn hoofd maakte overuren, waardoor de reis ook weer sneller leek te gaan. Vreemd. Heel vreemd. De volgende dag meldde ik me op het politiebureau in Arnhem, waar een rechercheur mijn aangifte doornam. Ze vermeldde droogjes dat ze de verdachte vanochtend had gezien en dat het haar was opgevallen dat hij flinke spierballen had. Ze wist nog niet wat ze gingen doen. Vaak betekende het dat hij vandaag nog vrij zou komen en een boete kon verwachten. Later die dag belde ze me terug. Ze hadden inmiddels de beelden van de camera’s in de stad bekeken en ze waren met het Openbaar Ministerie tot de conclusie gekomen dat ze het toch voor lieten komen bij de rechter. Ik kreeg daarna nog heel wat papierwerk thuisgestuurd. Ook een formulier met het verzoek of ik op de hoogte gebracht wilde worden van de uitspraak. Ik vulde nee in. Ik zou niet weten wat ik met die informatie moet. Het is gebeurd. Ik heb aangifte gedaan. Het is aan ‘het systeem’ hoe hij wordt gestraft. Ik heb er geen gevoel bij wat rechtvaardig is of niet. Ik hoef er ook niet nog een keer aan herinnerd te worden. Ik zou niet eens meer weten hoe hij eruitzag. Ik heb er ook geen nachtmerries aan overgehouden. Mijn oog kwam er goed vanaf. De huisarts zei dat ik geluk had gehad. Niets gebroken of beschadigd. Ik ben vaak genoeg de dans ontsprongen tijdens het uitgaan met agressieve mannen waar het allemaal met een sisser afliep. En dan te beseffen dat ik geen greintje agressie in me heb. En toch heb ik blijkbaar een kop waar mannen soms aanstoot aan geven. Ik heb geen idee hoe het werkt. Ik heb in elke stad in Nederland wel gefeest. In het noorden, oosten, westen en zelfs het zuiden. Maar overal waar ik kwam, zag ik vechtpartijen of belandde ik zelf in een zinloze discussie met iemand. Een gekke soort spanning die er kan heersen diep in de nacht in de steden van Nederland. Ook in Utrecht. Op koningsnacht. Het was bloedheet en het leek wel alsof de hele stad agressief was. Rennende politiepaarden door de Voorstraat. Er werd met flessen gegooid. Ruiten ingeslagen. Geschreeuwd en gedreigd. Bijna op elke hoek van de stad was er wel iets aan de hand. Vreemd. Zeer vreemd. Ik houd dus niet van laveloos drinken. Niet dat ik een kwade dronk heb. Maar ik wil niet in een vechtpartij belanden waar ik te dronken voor ben om te vluchten. Zelfs in het dorp waar ik ben opgegroeid was het een tijdje een traditie om er tijdens de kermis een zooitje van te maken. Altijd weer vechtpartijtjes. Elk jaar weer kwam de ME opdraven om de boel leeg te vegen. Elke keer weer keerde de meute tegen de ME. Al dat testosteron. Al die agressie. Zijn we zo gestrest en gefrustreerd met elkaar?
