Hey jij, Ik kijk graag naar filmhuisfilms. Vooral de ‘auteursfilm’. Een goed geschreven script, prachtig uitgevoerd. Ik wil gerust bekennen dat ik er in mijn studententijd soms een beetje mee koketteerde dat ik naar filmhuisfilms kijk. Niets menselijks is mij vreemd. Jezelf als de intellectueel neerzetten, is een prima masker, toch? Vooral omdat ik toen nog erg worstelde met mijn plek in de groep. Wie ben ik? Wat moet ik zijn? Al die levensvragen waarop ik nog steeds geen antwoord heb, maar wel een vermoeden van wat het antwoord moet zijn. Goed. Tomson de filmhuiskijkerman. Tot ik ontmaskerd werd door een huisgenoot. Die beweerde dat ik alleen maar naar filmhuisfilms keek omdat het filmhuisfilms waren. Om interessant over te komen. Hij kon zich namelijk niet voorstellen dat ik ze nou echt heeeeeel leuk vond. Ik was beledigd. Diep beledigd. Ik kwam in een identiteitscrisis terecht. Keek ik naar ze omdat ik ze leuk vond of omdat ik het leuk vond om te zeggen dat ik naar ze keek? Nou, eigenlijk dus allebei. De zwijgzame films waar je naar een langzaam groeiende plant kijkt, laat ik aan me voorbij gaan. Maar het werk van Alexander Payne, de Coen brothers. Bong Joon-Ho. Gus van Sant. Pedro Almodóvar. Genieten. Ik kan me de eerste dag op mijn studie nog goed herinneren. We zaten allemaal als vreemden bij elkaar en gingen ons om de beurt voorstellen. Een gast was duidelijk tien jaar ouder dan de rest en dat liet hij ook even merken. Hij had jarenlang gewerkt in de bouw en was met zijn zuur verdiende geld aan deze opleiding begonnen, omdat hij graag journalist wilde worden. Zijn filmsmaak was nog obscuurder. Net zoals hij naar muziek luisterde die leek op een lp die achterstevoren op 150 bpm werd afgedraaid. Een gast naast mij kon zijn zelfingenomen introductiepraatje niet aanhoren. Die fluisterde mij toe: ‘Alles wat we als eerste zeggen over onszelf tegen een vreemde, is hoe we graag willen dat anderen ons zien.’ Holy shit. Wat een wijsheid. De vraag is: wie zijn we dan echt? Ik heb echt geen flauw idee. Ik denk niet eens dat er een ‘echte’ versie van onszelf bestaat. We zijn alles wat we laten zien, wie we denken te zijn en hoe anderen ons zien. Het is zo subjectief als maar kan. Dat is het gebied waar de bedrieger gebruik van maakt. We willen die persoon die voor ons staat zo graag geloven. We gaan ervan uit dat diegene is wie die zegt dat die is en dat diens intenties kloppen. Terwijl we tegelijkertijd dus altijd op onze hoede zijn om bedrogen te worden. Vooral voor vreemden. Kan ik je vertrouwen? Maf hè? We hebben van nature een optimistisch geloof dat alles goedkomt. Dat de mensen die we kennen altijd eerlijk zijn en dat de meeste mensen deugen. De bedrieger weet dit en zet dit bewust in. De bedrieger streelt onze ijdelheid, wekt bewondering of is sympathiek en geeft ons het idee dat wij een kans krijgen die niemand anders krijgt. Die laat aan alles merken dat we de bedrieger kunnen vertrouwen. En zelfs als de bedrieger ontmaskerd wordt, hebben de slachtoffers soms nog steeds moeite met geloven dat ze bedrogen zijn. Mensen kunnen achteraf niet begrijpen waarom anderen erin zijn getrapt. Maar als je een op een tegenover de zwendelaar zit, dan word je in een verhaal gezogen waar je gevaarradars in slaap worden gesust. Doordat ze een beroep doen op je ijdelheid of je hebzucht voel jij je de uitverkorene. Fool me once, fool me twice. Are you death or paradise? zong Billie. Ik las dat degene die slachtoffer is geworden van een oplichter er de volgende keer net zo snel weer intrapt. Dus ja. Ze kan daar ‘fool me thrice’ aan toevoegen. Ook al zou een Engelsman eerder three times zeggen. Maar goed. Het heeft niets met ons intelligentieniveau te maken. Slimmere mensen trappen ook in leugens. Vaak zijn het de wat ‘slimmere’ leugens. Het is niet dat we allemaal als naïeve mensen rondlopen. Integendeel. Alleen we overschatten ons mensbeeld. We zijn heel slecht in het detecteren van leugens. Daarom lukt het al die charmante oplichters elke keer weer om ons in het ootje te nemen. Hoe komt het dat we zo makkelijk in iemands leugens trappen? Het heeft een evolutionaire aard. We geloven heel snel wat iemand ons zegt. Dat begint al als we kinderen zijn. We geloven alles wat onze ouders zeggen. Als we ze namelijk niet geloven, wordt het best ingewikkeld om in leven te blijven. ‘Weet je zeker dat je geen gif in mijn melk hebt gestopt, ma?’ Deze positieve instelling nemen we mee in ons volwassen leven. Laten we niet vergeten dat onze hele samenleving gebouwd is op vertrouwen. Elk contact, elke afspraak die we met vreemden en bekenden maken, draait om vertrouwen. Des te harder komt het aan als we achter iemands leugens komen… Ik ken helaas verschillende mensen die dachten een fantastische relatie te hebben met iemand. Bleek deze persoon jarenlang ook met anderen een relatie te hebben. Fuck zeg… Hoe kom je daar overheen? Dat is ook de grootste pijn bij ontrouw in relaties. Helemaal als die ontrouw jarenlang heeft geduurd. Dat betekent dat je jarenlang in een leugen hebt geleefd. Je dacht gelukkig te zijn met de ander. Dat je hetzelfde over de toekomst dacht. Weg illusie. Weg optimisme. Je kan je ook niet wapenen tegen ontrouw of tegen een bedrieger. Het enige wat je moet beseffen is: hoe groter de belofte, hoe groter de bewijslast moet zijn dat het klopt. Als het te goed klinkt om waar te zijn, is het waarschijnlijk niet waar… Laat het ze bewijzen. Dus als die huisgenoot echt twijfelde aan mijn filmhuisintenties, dan had hij me moeten vragen wat nou mijn favoriete film is en waarom. Ik kan heel bevlogen vertellen over films. Het is niet dat ik een kaskraker in de bioscoop weiger te zien. Ik kijk graag naar beide type films. Al sla ik de Marvel- en Starwarsfilms over. Maar hé. Er bestaat ook gewoon zoiets als persoonlijke smaak. Maar ik had na een tijdje wel door waar de pijn bij die huisgenoot zat. Hij bekende dat hij niet van filmhuisfilms hield. Maar ooit deed hij van wel. Hij had een enorme drang namelijk om anders te zijn op de middelbare school. Dus hij bezocht die films en ging daarover opscheppen.
