Hey jij, Ik houd niet van mooischrijverij. Van dat hele literaire gedoe. Het is een kunst op zich, absoluut. Maar niet aan mij besteed. Ik houd ook niet van mooi-weer-voetballers en al helemaal niet van onbegrijpelijke reclameteksten. Ik kwam dit in een tijdschrift tegen: ‘Jij weet dat kleine dingen een groot verschil kunnen maken. Wij weten dat ook. Ontdek de frisse sensatie en holistische gezondheidsvoordelen van nieuwe mondverzorgingrituelen. Door GUM, de pionier in holistische mondverzorging.’ Zeg gewoon dat je een schone bek en een frisse adem krijgt van tandpasta. Koppel dat aan een emotie zoals ‘zelfverzekerd’ voelen of ‘gezond’ zijn en je hebt een prima reclametekst. Kom op. We hebben het over tandpasta. Niet over de Blaupunkt Bluebot Xboost BPK-VCBB1XB stofzuiger. Ik was op vakantie in Limburg in de buurt van de Brand-brouwerij. Een paar vrienden kwamen een dag langs en bleven ook een nachtje slapen. Dus ik had Brand-bier gehaald. De Brand Up was mijn favoriet geworden die zomer. In de tuin legde ik met een ondergaande zon enthousiast uit hoe heerlijk dit smaakte. ‘Je proeft echt die oersmaak. Zo’n krachtige hopsmaak en dan die lichte afdronk. Genieten dit!’ Toen zei een vriendin tegen me: ‘Zit je nou de verkooptekst na te praten?’ Betrapt. Ik had mijn smaaksensatie inderdaad laten leiden door wat er op het etiket geplakt stond, maar was dit zelf helemaal vergeten. Ik dacht oprecht dat ik de smaak van dit bier had doorgrond. Maar ik heb helemaal geen smaak. Laat staan dat ik er de juiste woorden aan kan koppelen. Ik heb een beter geheugen dan de gemiddelde mens. Dat levert soms bizarre situaties op. Mensen die zich tijdens het feestje voor een tweede keer voorstellen en precies hetzelfde verhaal afsteken als twee uur eerder. Ik laat ze maar in de waan dat ik nog steeds een vreemde voor ze ben. Of toen ik tegen mijn manager tijdens zo’n een-op-een-gesprek zei: ‘Ik vind het zo raar dat we korting krijgen aangeboden via de werkgever bij de sportschool, maar dat ze in de kantine maar kroketten voor 50 cent blijven serveren en een bakje salade voor 4 euro aanbieden.’ Vervolgens zei zij een paar dagen later tegen mij, helemaal in haar nopjes met haar inzicht: ‘Dat is toch raar, dat we met korting mogen sporten, maar ons vet mogen mesten met kroketten van 50 cent hier.’ Joe. Een goed geheugen maakt mijn geheugen niet per se betrouwbaarder. Ik kan anekdotes uit boeken en films heel goed onthouden. Maar als ik ze een paar jaar later teruglees of terugkijk, blijken ze toch anders te zijn dan ik dacht. Andermans geheugen is ook onbetrouwbaar. Daarom veranderen de dezelfde verhalen die mensen regelmatig vertellen elke keer weer in de details. Cute. Ik heb wel eens de neiging om mensen naar de mond te praten. Ik denk uit fatsoen. Een collega van me zat zich heel erg op te winden over het buikje van zijn vader. ‘Het ziet er toch niet uit. Je moet er als mens goed uitzien. Gezond zijn. Niet alleen voor jezelf, maar ook voor mij als zoon. Het straalt ook op mij af.’ Toen hij zich een paar maanden later zat op te winden over het buikje van een collega, zei ik maar: ‘Ja, je moet er niet alleen goed uitzien voor jezelf, maar ook voor je familie toch?’ Waarna hij me heel raar aankeek en zei: ‘Nou, het gaat er vooral om dat je hart het niet begeeft over dertig jaar. Dat is toch wel wat belangrijker dan uiterlijk.’ Ik vond zijn uitspraak toen al kneuzig. Maar doordat ik hem lekker naar de mond zat te praten, was ik nu zelf de kneus geworden. Het is soms ook hilarisch als twee mensen met een slecht geheugen enthousiast tips uitwisselen over de nieuwste mobieltjes. Om dit drie weken later nog een keer letterlijk over te doen. Beiden met hetzelfde enthousiasme. Precies dezelfde tips. Alsof het verleden niet bestaat. Ik had op de middelbare school een vriend die wel veel van biertjes hield. Hij kwam op mijn verjaardag in de middag langs, zoop er een aantal op en toen vroeg mijn ma of hij bleef eten. Hij had erg veel zin in de bruiloft van zijn pa aankomend weekend. Ze hadden paar dagen eerder een vrijgezellenfeest gehad in Nijmegen. Hij heeft die middag en avond acht keer het verhaal over dat vrijgezellenfeest verteld en hoe de bruiloft er qua planning uitzag. Ik kon wel door de grond zakken. En mijn ouders reageerden elke nieuwe ronde iets minder enthousiast op zijn verhaal. Het voordeel van iemand met een slecht geheugen naast je hebben, is wel dat ik dan dezelfde grap elke keer weer kan maken. Die lacht er elke keer weer net zo hard om. Win-win. Ik studeerde in Zwolle en woonde in een studentenhuis in Deventer. In Zwolle was er kamernood. In Deventer kreeg je geld toe als je kwam, bij wijze van spreken. Het was slechts twintig minuten met de trein. Normaal gesproken reisde ik doordeweeks. Maar ditmaal ging ik op zaterdag naar Zwolle toe, naar een vriend, om samen te eten. Ik stapte in de trein, zette mijn mp3-speler aan en tuurde dromerig uit het raam. Toen de conducteur naast me stond, haalde ik mijn ov-weekkaart uit mijn portemonnee, gaf die aan hem en keek weer half uit het raam. Maar de conducteur deed niet wat ‘ie normaal deed: de kaart teruggeven en doorlopen. Hij bleef staan. ‘Waar ga je heen?’ vroeg hij. ‘Zwolle’, zei ik. ‘Besef je wel dat het zaterdag is?’ Toen viel het kwartje pas. Ik had een kaartje moeten kopen. Met een rood hoofd verontschuldigde ik me. Kutzooi. Een boete was wel het laatste wat mijn betaalrekening kon gebruiken. Maar op de een of andere manier had die beste vent een goede dag. Hij zou het door de vingers zien, als ik in Zwolle meteen uitstapte. Ja, ik zei toch dat ik daarnaartoe ging? Nou ja. Ja. Ik stap daar uit. Beloofd. Normaal gesproken heb ik het geluk niet aan mijn kont hangen. Ik bezit niet de gave om mezelf uit problemen te lullen. Sommige mensen kunnen dat wel. Die hebben een bepaalde charme over zich heen waarmee ze met alles wegkomen. Niet alleen dat. Ze worden vaak nog geholpen ook. Ik weet niet hoe ze het doen. Het is een soort mix van naïviteit, een glimlach en een goed gepeelde oprechtheid. Ik stond eens op het station in Zwolle op de laatste trein naar Deventer te wachten. Bij de rookpaal stond een man met een zwarte hoed en een zwarte regenjas. Hij moest minstens het driedubbele van mijn leeftijd zijn. Hij stak een joint op en zei: ‘De verboden sigaret.’ Vervolgens begon hij het gedoogbeleid tot in detail uit te leggen. In de trein gingen we tegenover elkaar zitten. Toen de conducteur ons treinstel binnenkwam, keek de man me aan en zei: ‘Ik heb geen kaartje.’ Hij haalde uit zijn zak wat oude treinkaartjes. ‘Mijn vrouw koopt normaal gesproken van die ongedateerde treinkaartjes. Dat is handig. Dan hoef ik ze alleen te stempelen als ik op reis ga. Maar die waren op.’ ‘Dat is balen’, zei ik. Hij knikte geruststellend. ‘Ik lul me er wel uit hoor. Ik wist dat dit eraan zat te komen. Ik praat me er altijd uit.’ Geen idee hoe die het deed, maar het lukte hem. De conducteur keek hem argwanend aan, maar het verhaal dat hij afstak was blijkbaar goed genoeg om het door de vingers te zien. Niet alleen dat. Hij kreeg het ook nog voor elkaar dat de trein een extra stop ging maken bij station Olst. Zijn eindbestemming. Omdat er vanaf Deventer geen bus meer reed. Terwijl dit niet in de planning van deze treinrit lag. Zo geschiedde. De trein stopte in Olst. Hij trok de rand van zijn hoed iets naar beneden als afscheidsgroet en stapte uit. Hoe krijgen sommige mensen dit voor elkaar? Dat is wat oplichters ook goed kunnen. Hoe maf het verhaal dat ze afsteken ook is, ze hebben een charme waardoor mensen het geloven. De oplichter heeft het talent jou een goed gevoel te geven, je ego te strelen en je in een complot te lullen dat je gek bent als je niet meedoet. De enige manier waarop je je tegen zoiets kan beschermen, is beseffen dat tegenover wonderlijke beloftes ook wonderlijke bewijslasten moeten staan. Hoe ongeloofwaardiger het klinkt, hoe groter het bewijs moet zijn dat het waar is. Bill Gates die het virus heeft uitgevonden én verspreid vraagt dus om hele grote bewijsstukken. Als iemand zegt: ‘Ik kan over water llopen.’ Nou, bewijs het maar. Een video waarin dat gebeurt is dus niet goed genoeg. Maar dat is het punt… Mensen willen het niet zien. Daarom trappen sommige mensen in websites die dure spullen aanbieden voor stuntaanbiedingen die eigenlijk te mooi om waar te zijn. Het gekke is dat het weinig met intelligentie te maken heeft of je erin trapt of niet. Slimme mensen trappen in slimmere oplichtingstrucjes. Omdat iemand die slim is, zichzelf ook daadwerkelijk slim vindt, denkt ‘ie het gekke verhaal te begrijpen en gaat ‘ie argumenten zoeken waarom het wel waar moet zijn. Ik zat eens in Egypte op zo’n kameel. Sorry. Iets wat ik nooit meer ga doen. Met die kameel om de piramides lopen en zo. Voelde me een enorme toerist. De gids zei nog van tevoren: ‘Neem niets aan van mensen onderweg.’ Het was zo fucking heet en het water uit mijn flesje smaakte als thee zonder smaak. Onderweg kwamen we iemand tegen. Het leek erop alsof hij en de gids elkaar kenden. Die man gaf me een gekoeld flesje limonade en stopte een gekoeld flesje water in de buideltas van de kameel. Het leek alsof het onderdeel van de expeditie was. Ik keek de gids verward aan, maar die knikte goedkeurend. Daarna kwam die man om geld vragen. Huh? Wat is dit? Ik gaf hem maar het geld. Waarna de gids daarna de wijsneus ging uithangen. ‘Ik zei toch: niets aannemen.’ In de anderhalf uur die volgde, vertelde de gids me verhalen over zijn leven. Hij was arm. Sliep in een stal bij de dieren. Het leven was zwaar. Heel zwaar. Aan zijn kleding en schoenen te zien ging het hem wel goed voor de wind. Maar goed. Zijn broertje was ook ernstig ziek en zijn ouders konden geen medische hulp betalen. Het kwam allemaal op zijn schouders neer. Dit ging zo maar door. Daarna begon hij te vissen naar hoeveel fooi ik hem straks zou geven. Of ik daar al over had nagedacht. Toen die kamelenrit – inclusief foto van mijn vinger op het topje van de piramide (BESCHAMEND) – klaar was, gingen al die mannen bij de stallen om me heen staan. Het was intimiderend. De bedelende hand werd zichtbaar. Kom maar op met je fooi. Ik was oververhit en kon nauwelijks nadenken. Ik gaf hem maar 10 euro. Dat was niet genoeg. Ik viste nog wat euromunten uit mijn rugzak, excuseerde me dat ik niet meer had en schaamde me daar erg voor. Terwijl ik natuurlijk gewoon voor die hele expeditie al de hoofdprijs had betaald. Een bedrag waar je als farao in dit land kon leven. Pas terug in de hotelkamer besefte ik hoe ik was gemanipuleerd door die gasten. Dat ik me schuldig voelde, terwijl zij mij in het ootje hadden genomen. Of nou ja. Ik was niet per se opgelicht, want ik was niet bedrogen. Maar wel gemanipuleerd. Tja. Pijnlijk wel, dat ik zo weinig karakter had om me te verweren. Ik voelde me sowieso ongemakkelijk in dat land. Overal waar ik kwam, was ik die rijke, westerse toerist. Wisten zij veel dat dit reisje niet per se goedkoop was en ik twee jaar lang gespaard had voor deze reis. Ik kan dat dus niet langs me heen laten glijden. Ik voelde me de hele vakantie ongemakkelijk door dat gebedel om geld van iedereen. Het maakte niet uit wat ik kocht, ik had altijd het idee dat ze de hoofdprijs vroegen door mijn blonde haren en blauwe ogen. Dit nooit meer. Leuk hoor, rugzakje op en door Azië trekken. Maar ik kan dat beeld van de verwende Europeaan, die met een goede zorgverzekering en gevulde portemonnee op zak even zichzelf gaat terugvinden daar in hun armoede, niet loslaten. Ik word er heel ongemakkelijk van. Bij mezelf. Ik heb geen oordeel over anderen. Echt niet. Doe wat je wil. Maar ik kan het gewoon niet. Mijn toenmalige werkgever had een zusterbedrijf opgericht dat werk verrichtte in ontwikkelingslanden. De werkgever gaf geen geld, maar zond personeel uit om daar tijdelijk te helpen. Iedereen die dit wilde, kon zich hiervoor inschrijven. Regelmatig vroeg mijn manager of dit niet iets voor mij was. Maar nee. Ik, als witte, lange vent, die even in anderhalve maand mee ga helpen daar met al mijn wijsheid en ervaring. Tijdelijk in hun land wonen en daarna veilig terugkeren naar mijn warme douche en schone drinkwater. Ik krijg er kortsluiting van. Ik heb niet het idee dat ik ook maar iets bijdraag daar. Ik heb niet het idee dat ik als een gelijkwaardig mens daar aan de vergadertafel zit. Ik heb niet het idee dat ik voor mezelf moet kiezen en het moet doen omdat het gaaf is, tijdelijk leven in een Afrikaans land. Leuk om te vertellen op verjaardagfeestjes en zo. Dus ik zei nee. De manager begreep het niet helemaal. Zij deed het sowieso niet. Maar ja, zij had een gezin met twee jonge kinderen. Oh. Oké. Dat is dus wel een geldig argument, maar mijn ongemakkelijkheid niet? Want volgens haar maakte ik het allemaal te zwaar. Ik deed alsof de last van de wereld op mijn schouders rustte. Ik snapte haar onbegrip niet helemaal. Ik vond haar niet het type dat mijn mening zou veroordelen. Tot ik erachter kwam dat elke afdeling een target had om een x aantal mensen per jaar uit te zenden naar deze buitenlandse projecten. Blijkbaar was op onze afdeling het animo lager dan gemiddeld. En dat was niet de bedoeling. Dus onze managers waren aangesproken door de directie. Aaah. Oké. Nu begon ik het te begrijpen. Ze snapte mijn nee niet, omdat er een target gehaald moest worden. Veel collega’s op mijn afdeling hadden een gezin. Ik niet. Ik was jong. Vertoonde inzet. Een man. Die zou de wereld moeten verkennen en het idealisme in me moeten uitvoeren. Ik had op papier natuurlijk de meeste potentie om ‘ja’ te zeggen op dit verzoek. Bij mijn ‘ja’ was de target gehaald. De directie blij. Managers blij. Afrika blij. Ze bleef pushen en aangezien mijn nee’s nooit heel duidelijk worden begrepen, liet ik me in een ‘onderzoek het eens’-scenario dwingen. Ze moedigde me aan om met collega’s te praten die daar waren geweest. Ze schreef het zelfs op als werkafspraak. Nou. Oké. Dan lul ik voor de vorm om alsnog nee te zeggen. Ik ging lunchen met een collega die daar was geweest. Hij begon in geuren en kleuren te vertellen hoe achtergesteld het daar was. Behalve dan dat iedereen een smartphone had. Ja, dat zou je niet verwachten. Maar dat hadden ze. Ik zei nog dat ik het vrij logisch vond dat ze een smartphone hadden. Ze hebben waarschijnlijk nooit telefoonkabels onder de grond gehad. Te ingewikkeld en te duur. Maar voor smartphones kan je een paar masten opzetten en ze werken. Dat is makkelijk uit te voeren. En waarom zou iemand in Afrika niet willen bellen met zijn moeder of beste vriend? Alsof ze daar nog steeds rooksignalen gebruiken. Doe normaal. Maar hij luisterde niet echt. Hij ging verder met zijn verhaal. Ze betaalden niet per maand je salaris uit, want dan kwamen mensen een maand lang niet opdagen. Haha. Ongelooflijk toch? En je zag ze in krotten wonen en de mensen met wie hij werkte, durfden geen nee te zeggen of feedback te geven. Het laatste wat je wilde, was je been daar breken. Dan lag je daar tussen de leprapatiënten met je benen in het gips. En die mentaliteit was verschrikkelijk. Want ze zeggen altijd ja, zelfs als ze het niet kunnen uitvoeren. Ja, daar moet je dan wel rekening mee houden als je daar naartoe gaat. Dat je niet dezelfde kwaliteit aan werk kan opleveren zoals we hier gewend zijn. Maar het was een ervaring voor het leven. Dus ik moest het zeker doen. Hier word je toch extreem ongemakkelijk van? Dit verheven, cynische gelul? Nee, dank je. Ik hoef mijn cynische ziel niet te verrijken met zo’n ervaring. Ik hoef ook de wereld niet te redden. Zelfs niet alsof. En al helemaal niet in een ander continent. Liefs, Tomson |
